I'm thinking about opening an image hosting site, and i would like to know a few things before i start.
1, what hosting specs would you reccomend?
2, how would i get a script for it and would it be expensive?
3, what is the best way to cover the costs and earn money?
4, is it hard to promote and image hosting site?
5, if you had or have and image hosting site did you find it profitable?

2, how would i get a script for it and would it be expensive? Custom, Yes it would not be cheap at all, If you got one of those tacky free ones why would people choose you?
3, what is the best way to cover the costs and earn money? Ads, Premium accounts
4, is it hard to promote and image hosting site? No harder than other sites, Before you start do a little research there are thousands of img hosting sites, why would people choose you maybe offer a fresh feature? or look into another original concept.
5, if you had or have and image hosting site did you find it profitable? No, but i sold on quickly

1, what hosting specs would you reccomend? Work From The Bottom, Start with a small account and when stuff starts to progress keep on going up. Its good to get a script with multi-server functionality for the future.
2, how would i get a script for it and would it be expensive? I reccommend geting one custom made. Could cost $50-$1000 but at least it will be unique. If you want to buy a stock one located on 1 or 2 sites then pm me. I can make you a custom one as well if needed.
3, what is the best way to cover the costs and earn money? Ads, adsense & other ppc work but only with a show.php page. Otherwise just try and contract adds.
4, is it hard to promote and image hosting site? Not at all. Get it started by advertising for free in forums.
5, if you had or have and image hosting site did you find it profitable? I have one currently, makes about $2 a day. Mind you, im just about to buy one pulling 80gb's a day. And thats only 1000uniques an hour odd. Imagine how many servers imageshack has...

i don't think i will run an image hosting site as it seems to be too expensie and there are already enough imagehosting sites around at the minute

Nothing's cheap unless you really cut corners, then you run the risk of it being unreliable or restricted in functionality

You could always cut a bit of code yourself or modify a free script and host it on a free service for a while and see if you get any takers, if so, move it to a paid host.
