Templates are designed just like any other page, simple editor (I get Frontpage as part of my Microsoft partner package, but any could be used), then have a copy of IE and FF to view the result on the dev server and a copy of FF with the DOM inspector to see what is actually happening during the CSS layout.

And a copy of the Sitepoint "Designing without tables using CSS" at hand just in case I go blank and need to remind my old & tired grey matter

The only snag with a template for a dynamic system like Joomla is that even if you have a visual editor, then you can only see the whole effect by viewing in a browser.

I did a few tweaks to the default mambo template for www.toddlerrific.com, but now the time is right to go a bit deeper with the design

www.pcwebtalk.com.ru <- I set up a demo. THe install was easyier than anything else before, the WYSIWYG editor is rather buggy, but it works. In my opinion, this is my third favorite CMS, first being dragonfly, second being plone, and third being this. (I hate the rest of the CMSs.

It is very good, but the admin panel is CPU intensive, the WYSIWYG editor is very buggy, and freezes my pc quite badly, and it is generally good, but it needs some improvement to be as good as other CMSs

freezes your PC, that's odd, mines an old Duron 1.3 which is well slow given modern standards, the local dev server is only a Duron 1.2 and my test dev system rocks

I've not put it onto the main hosting server yet as I'm still "fiddling" and hoping it'll appear in Fantastico or the cPanel installer soon.
