| Super Moderator | By ASP I'm presuming you mean server side VB Script on a Windows platform as ASP is not a programming language. The Plus... Simple VB like language, easy to learn, can access Windows based COM apps & Access databases with ease. The Minus... Proprietary Microsoft technology, not easily portable to other platforms If you're asking the question as you're looking at changing, then basically you need to decide whether you want to be locked into Microsoft technology (and how much has already been invested in the system, is it cost effective to change) ?

thanks for the reply. I'm just looking for advice on how best to optimise our site. I've heard that .asp pages dont do so well in SERPS. Also I see you have a computer/internet site. Would you like to exchange links? | |

| Super Moderator | It's the content and how it's presented that's important to the search engines. The delivery is not so important as long as the URL's don't contain long ?option=value&option2=value... strings as these often get filtered. If you're using Apache, then you can look at mod_rewrite to hide these, however not sure if there's anything for IIS (or even if mod_rewrite is *nix only) If you're concerned with presenting an asp extension, then why not put up a shtml and include the asp code that way ?

| Cool Newbie | You can also create redirects in IIS and make your asp try and work out what url params are being set via the "page" that is being requested but if you are new to asp and programming i would not worry too much about it. At the moment, google does follow pages with querystring arguments but you want to avoid putting anything in there that resembles a session id. See if your site is in google and if google is indexing your pages with query string args. If so you are ok and direct your optimisation efforts elsewhere where they can be more productive. The main thing to bear in mind is that asp is just a way of writing a program that outputs html which your browser renders. To your browser (and a spider) it is no different to the html that it receives when asking for a html page. |
