| Newbie | Hi everyone. I'm relativly new to the SEO scene :P and had a quick quiery I hope somebody won't mind answering for me. I'm working on a website which is going for highly competitive keywords and was planning to rely quite heavily on the use of domain names in addition to good general SEO practices. The website in question has approx 40+ variety of products, all be it on the same theme. There is the main domain (which has bugger all to do with the product, grrr - I can't change this for the client though). However, for pages relating to product #1 I would aqquire product#1.com and point that towards the product page. Product#2 would get product#2.com and so on and so forth. The money for purchase hundreds of domains is not really a problem, but I was hoping someone could give me feedback as to weather this is going to be a succesful stratagy - when used alongide other SEO techniques - ie, I'm not hinging all my bets on it, just thinking it is yet another chink in the armour. Thanks in advance for any advice and I'm glad to be here. Martin |

| Newbie | Thanks for the reply. Are you reffering to targetting keywords generally or within the new domains? Can I also add that it won't be duplicate content. Each page with a seperate domain would give completly different content about a separate product. I can't seem to find the info on weather I'll get penalized for this. It doesn't class as a door way or anything else dodgy does it? Last edited by Martin; 15-08-2005 at 00:04. |

| WMT Sponsor | First you need to understand that your domain is not what's going to get you SEO. Although I think you understand that. You also don't need to go purchasing loads and loads of domain on each product either. Your domain is not the be all and end all of SEO. For example...I could if I wanted have a domain called http://whateverIwant.com and still get a high rankin even if the domain has NOTHING to do with my content. Why? Good use of keywords in my content. And that's means loads and loads of content. Lots of articles, or maybe in your case lots of content rich pages about your specific products. You gotta be careful with overdoing keywords too. If you overuse them..Google and other SE's will consider that "spamming" the Se's. If you got good products wherein you could create lots of good content (even 2-3 products on one page with lots of content) utilizing a few good keywords related to your content then those pages will be most likely spidered first...ultimately leading up to your home page (main domain) being listed. Would you be penalized for lots of separate domains? Not at all. But why spare the expense on this when you can do it with one domain? Also, btw, doorway pages are not dodgy..nor do they ever get indexed with SE's usually (cause they usually don't have enough content). They are simply a great way to entice people to click thru to your main site if done properly.
