For researching I'd say Adwords keyword tool (keyword suggestions na d performance data)...its free at least.

I used Hitwise as well in my previous company but that is paid, as is Word Tracker and Trellian's Keyword Discovery, but they both have free trials and it seems they have keyword suggestion tools as well..which confuses me (free but...paid...? I assume with the paid you get to enter more than one keyword at a time and get more precise results with performance data?).

SEObook has a free tool (suggestions and perfomance stats on Google, Yahoo! and MSN) and I just found a nice article that may help others reading this post.. its in the SEObook archives since I can't post links, it may be a little outdated but there are still some nice suggestions. People can search for SEObook 001013 and it should be the first article (the number is the archive reference number I think).

I found SEOdigger (for competitor tracking and keyword analysis) too just now, I haven't used it myself though.

(Hi by the way...I've seen you on the Irish forum too)

I mainly use google adword keyword tool. Though I also use Wordtracker and Overture to compare their results.

I also use Google's Adwords to help me select the keywords and to find out how competitive they are. The "suggestions" feature can also help you improve and come up with other keywords that could help you rank better in search engines.
