directories submissions
social networking&bookmarking
blog posting&forum posting
paid ads

About article submission, why dropping it? If you have the expertise to write something unique and helpful why wouldn't you submit some of your articles? They are good traffic drivers if submitted to digg,mix,reddit etc

Good rankings will depend on this areas:
- Well optimized page/s
- Good content
- Quality or Natural Links

You can always choose what kind of methods you can use in any SEO campaign and the effect will be based on how well did you execute that technique and how good and reliable the sites that you have used. Example; you cannot expect a good result even if you posted 10,000 posts on a forum that does not have lots of traffic, high PR, good reputation, do follow attributes or have active members and has a lot of spam.
